Hydration – Are You Getting Enough
We all know that it is important to drink water. The whole “drink 2 litres a day” situation has been played over and over again, but is this really accurate? What about if we spend half our time in the water? Does that change things?
Here are a quick few statistics to give you some perspective
Our brains : 74% water
Our bones: 24% water
Our muscles: 75% water
Our bodies rely on water more than any other form of nutrient. We can go for a staggering three weeks without food, yet only a few days without water. Though water remains such a necessity to humans, most of us are walking around in a contstnt state of dehydration – and we don’t even know it. Here are a few reasons why we should drink more water, for both surfers, and non surfers alike.
Drinking increased amounts of water helps our bodies flush out all the toxins that we are exposed to throughout the day. This keeps our bodies working efficiently and prevents a toxin overload resulting in sickness, disease and fatigue. By flushing our bodies, we flush the nasties that are constantly putting our system under stress.
Ample amounts of hydration can aid in body aches and pains of the joints. When our bodies are low in h20, the vessels in our blood dilate, making for swelling and stiffness throughout our entire body. Remember stiffness + surfing are far from an ideal mix! Drink up
The most obvious organ in our body – the skin, relies on water to stay alive. The more hydrated the skin is (through moisturising and hydration) the more supple and “elastic like” it will be. If our skin is stretched tight it is much more prone to breakouts, wrinkles and overall dullness. If you want your skin to glow, get drinking!
When we are dehydrated our cells shrivel up. This makes for fatigued and unhappy muscles and puts our entire body under unnecessary stress. The more energy we have to spend just to function means the less energy we can spend our our performance both in and out of the water.
Because our system is constantly fighting infection as was mentioned earlier, we have to keep flushing the system. When we drink adequate amounts of water, we can assist the fats, proteins and carbs through the digestive system, keeping them from just sitting inside us and fermenting (yuck). Not only will drinking water keep the nutrients flowing, but it will help prevent against bloating, gas, and intestinal pain.
So…how much should I be drinking?
As surfers we are constantly exposed to harsh elements, which means that we really need to watch our hydration levels, more so than the average person. I would recommend at least 3 – 4 litres a day to ensure that you are getting enough hydration not only to function efficiently with your daily tasks, but to be able to last that four hour session to your maximum capability.
