How to Really Get Up in the Morning – A Guide to Dawny Sessions

 

Dawnys , we love them, we hate them, we plan for them and then…we hit snooze and fall back to sleep. Waking up and abandoning your warm and cozy bed to jump into the often cooler ocean can be a slightly uninviting task. No matter how much you enjoy surfing. Though when we are out there catching waves, we wouldn’t want it any other way, sometimes we need a little push out of our beds, and into the day. Below are some tips that will help make those early morning sessions, just that little bit easier.

Have someone rely on you

Making plans to meet somebody at the beach, or to pick someone up makes you accountable for more than yourself. If you don’t get your butt out of bed, you will be letting somebody else down. Not only do you have to be responsible for more than yourself, knowing that somebody else is suffering the same struggle to arise is slightly comforting 😉

Put your alarm on the other side of the room

Oh how easy it is to just roll over, hit snooze and pull the blankets over your head. This isn’t so easy if your alarm/phone is on the other side of the room! Often once we are up and about we couldn’t really imagine going back to sleep. Do yourself a favour and make yourself walk (or stumble) to turn off your alarm. The further away, the better.

Have a dry wetsuit

No matter how you frame it, getting out of your warm bed into a cold, soggy wetsuit is never ever going to get you excited about early mornings. Make sure you hang up (and try and dry out) your wetsuit the day before. It only takes a minute and will save you some serious emotional pain the next day.

Sleep with your curtains open

It can often help to sleep with your curtains open to let any light that has risen shine into your room (obviously this doesn’t apply to every dawn session). This makes the task of facing the early dark world a little brighter (literally.) Not only will your body be more likely to think that it really is time to get up, but it may heat up your room, and will make save you from tripping over that book you left on the ground the night before.

Remember, once you’re up, you’re up. 

You never regret waking up early. It is a blessing to be able to get more hours in the day, and to reap the benefits that early morning surfs can often provide. Waking up early is something that is habitual. Try not to think of it negatively, more so think of yourself as someone that is lucky enough to have a passion that includes basking in the ocean, whilst watching the sun rise. Something in which many people will never get to experience.
